Daniele Guevara is a Toronto-based Set, Lighting and Projection Designer and is a graduate of the University of British Columbia’s Design and Technical Theatre Program.
In Vancouver, Daniele has worked with companies such as Touchstone Theatre, The Electric Company Theatre, The Vancouver Playhouse and Ballet BC. After moving to Toronto in 2003, she found herself assisting and drafting for designers Michael Levine, Yannik Larivee, Judith Bowden, Dany Lyne, Sue Lepage, Julia Tribe, Astrid Janson, Christopher Dennis, Steve Lucas, Bonnie Beecher, Glenn Davidson and Paul Matheison. Daniele has worked and designed for companies including Buddies In Bad Times Theatre, fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre Company, The Blue Man Group (Toronto and Las Vegas), Crow’s Theatre, Lorraine Kimsa Theatre for Young People, Pleiades Theatre, Shakespeareworks, Tarragon Theatre and the Banff Centre for the Arts. Her set and lighting design for Touchstone Theatre’s production of The Trigger earned her a 2005 Jessie Richardson Award nomination for Outstanding Lighting Design, Large Theatre Category. Daniele was Set and Lighting Designer for "Arthouse Cabaret" (Buddies In Bad Times Theatre, 2007) which won the 2008 Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding New Musical.
Recently, Daniele has become increasingly interested in Opera and Dance genres. Having received a grant from Theatre Ontario, in January and February 2009 she travelled to the Royal Opera House in London, England to be mentored by Canada's most accomplished Set and Costume Designer, Michael Levine. Daniele's latest lighting design for "The Sunlight Zone" (Tipping Point Productions, 2009) was for aerialists whose choreography included dancing on 30 foot long vertical ropes.
Daniele's creativity is driven by a lack of fear, a willingness to experiment, and a resilient enthusiasm for exploring new territory. Her interest in the performing arts is accompanied by curiously dappling in illustration, sculpture, maquette art and encaustic collage.
The Design Mandate:
“Light as a transformative sculptural tool establishes space and rhythm, punctuating shapes, revealing and interacting with textures. I aim to create environments where scenery with lighting achieves a cohesive and beautiful narrative. While I enjoy collaborating with associate designers, I believe that designing both scenery and lighting is an advantage; it is a great privilege allowing me to create with utmost visual control. Since projectors are essentially lighting fixtures, I am intrigued by projection, unconventional projection surfaces and the experimental use of video.”
Side Note:
In addition to designing for Theatre and Dance, Daniele has been a lighting technician for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation since 2003. Daniele has been behind the scenes for the National News, Sunday Morning News, The Rick Mercer Report and the Royal Canadian Air Farce. As an advanced user of Vectorworks and Renderworks software, Daniele is currently employed in the CAD and Design Department of BaAM Productions, a Design Services and Project Services company that creates large scale events and permanent installations.
